U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the United States would extend its ceasefire agreement with Iran indefinitely, as a new round of peace talks was put on hold. Iran has not yet responded to Trump’s announcement extending the ceasefire. Both sides have warned that they are prepared to resume fighting if no agreement is reached.

Pakistan had originally planned to host the second round of talks, but the White House put Vice President ID Vance’s visit to Islamabad on hold after Iran refused to resume negotiations.

According to two officials, Pakistani leaders, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, have worked tirelessly to secure an agreement between the two sides to hold a second round of ceasefire talks.

Trump could change his mind about negotiating with Iran at any moment. An official said that Trump has other options besides resuming airstrikes.
