On Saturday, tensions in the Strait of Hormuz escalated once again as Iran reversed its decision to reopen the vital waterway and opened fire on ships attempting to pass through the strait, in retaliation for the U.S. continuing to block access to Iranian ports.

The fragile ceasefire is set to expire on Wednesday. Iran says it has received a new proposal from U.S. and Pakistani mediators are working to arrange another round of direct talks.

Iran’s Supreme National Security Council stated that the U.S. put forward new proposals during the visit of the Pakistani Army Chief of Staff to Iran, and these are currently under review.

However, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Saeed Khatibzadeh said that Iran is not yet ready for a new round of face-to-face negotiations.
