On Monday, Israelis from across the political spectrum reacted angrily to news of the preliminary agreement between the United States and Iran, calling it a disaster for Israel and directing their anger at one person: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Netanyahu said at a press conference on Monday that “with an agreement, without an agreement,” he will continue fighting to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. He emphasized that it was the U.S., not Israel, that had reached the agreement, and that he had not conceded to Iran’s demand that Israel withdraw from Lebanon as part of the deal.

Other Israeli government officials, rivals, politicians, and commentators were quick to criticize the preliminary agreement, marking an informal referendum on Netanyahu’s tenure ahead of this fall’s general election and highlighting his isolation at home, in the region, and, increasingly, from the U.S.
