U.S. President Donald Trump has once again criticized Pope Leo XIV, a move that could complicate Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s planned visit to the Vatican this week aimed at mending relations. Rubio is often called upon to tone down or explain Trump’s harsh remarks on issues related to Europe, NATO, and the Middle East.
“The pope would rather talk about the fact that it’s OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said in the interview on Monday. “And I don’t think that’s very good. I think he’s endangering a lot of Catholics and a lot of people.”
However, the Pope did not say that Iran should acquire nuclear weapons. He called for more peace talks and generally criticized the war against Iran, as well as Trump’s specific threats of large-scale attacks on civilians.
