Two regional officials said on Monday that Iran proposed that it would lift its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz if the U.S. lifts its blockade against Iran and ends the war in a proposal which would delay discussions on the Islamic Republic’s nuclear programme.

Iran’s offer was put forward during the Iranian foreign minister’s visit to Russia. Russia has long been a key supporter of Tehran. It is not yet clear what assistance Moscow might now offer.

It seems unlikely that U.S. President Donald Trump will accept this proposal, which was conveyed to the Americans by Pakistan. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio appears to have ruled out any agreement that excludes Iran’s nuclear programme.

Meanwhile, in a joint statement led by Bahrain, dozens of countries have once again called for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
