The U.S. military said Monday that it had carried out “self-defense” strikes in southern Iran, targeting missile launch sites and ships laying mines, even as U.S. President Donald Trump stated on social media that negotiations were “proceeding nicely”.
Earlier, Trump stated that any agreement to end the war in Iran should require several other countries, including Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, to join the Abraham Accords—a set of agreements brokered by the U.S. during Trump’s first term aimed at normalizing relations with Israel.
Trump has long wanted Saudi Arabia to join, but Saudi Arabia insists that any normalization agreement must first establish a clear path toward Palestinian statehood. This is also crucial for Pakistan, as it is one of the countries that does not have diplomatic relations with Israel.
Egypt and Jordan have officially recognized Israel and signed long-term peace treaties.
