A senior official from the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah said on Monday that the organization firmly opposes any agreements that might result from direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel held in the United States, and that Hezbollah would not abide by such agreements.
The Lebanese and Israeli ambassadors to the U.S. are expected to hold talks in Washington. As there are no diplomatic relations between Lebanon and Israel, this will mark the first face-to-face meeting between envoys from the two countries in decades.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated that the aim is to disarm Hezbollah and potentially reach a peace agreement between Lebanon and Israel.
Since Wednesday, Israeli strikes on Beirut and its southern suburbs have ceased, but fierce fighting continues in southern Lebanon.
