Ukraine and nine other countries announced Monday that they would draw on Kyiv’s experience in fighting Russia’s full-scale invasion over the past four years to form an coalition to protect Europe from ballistic missile attacks.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the leaders of Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom stated that they recognize “the growing threat posed by ballistic missiles”, which are more difficult to intercept than cruise missiles or drones.
The timeline for establishing the defense system was not provided and the coalition remains open to other countries.
Zelenskyy said that Ukraine and its partners could jointly develop a low-cost missile system for mass production within the next 12 months, enabling Europe to acquire new anti-ballistic capabilities for itself and provide them to other countries around the world that need protection.
