More than four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion, U.S. President Donald Trump and the leaders of the Group of Seven put the war in Ukraine back at the top of the agenda at a summit on Tuesday, and the U.S. may soon reimpose sanctions on Russian oil shipments.
Previously, due to a sharp rise in crude oil prices, the U.S. temporarily eased sanctions on some Russian oil exports in March. The exemption period has been extended.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that G7 leaders supported Ukraine’s request for more Patriot missiles and discussed ways to increase production through licensed manufacturing. Patriot missiles are capable of countering Russian ballistic missile attacks on Ukraine’s power grid and cities.
At the same time, the United Kingdom announced new sanctions targeting Russia’s “shadow fleet” used to transport oil and gas, as well as the financial networks Moscow uses to evade Western sanctions.
