U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that, following the rejection of Tehran’s latest proposal, the ceasefire in Iran is on “ life support”. Trump also proposed suspending the federal petrol tax to help counter the rise in fuel prices caused by the war.
Trump also said he supported suspending the federal tax on gasoline — just over 18 cents per gallon and 24 cents for diesel. This would require the approval of the Republican-controlled Congress. The tax generates over $23 billion in revenue annually.
Before he made that pledge, petrol prices had soared to over $4.50 a gallon last week.
Meanwhile, Pakistan is continuing its efforts to broker a compromise and is seeking to arrange a memorandum of understanding aimed at ending the war and paving the way for broader dialogue between the two sides on the issues where differences remain.
