The United States officials state that, despite President Donald Trump’s repeated threats that “Cuba is next” and the possibility that U.S. warships deployed to the Middle East in response to the conflict with Iran might return via Cuba, the U.S. has no immediate plans to take military action against Havana.

On Thursday, the Trump administration imposed new sanctions on Havana, the most significant of which targeted GAESA (Grupo de Administración Empresarial S.A.), a business group operated by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba.

Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State and the son of Cuban immigrants, has long taken a hard line against the Cuban leadership. Rubio is currently visiting Rome and Vatican City, where he met Pope Leo XIV on Thursday, partly to discuss the situation in Cuba, where the Catholic Church wields significant influence.
