On Friday, Lebanon entered into a 10-day ceasefire agreement that is expected to halt fighting between Israel and the militant group Hezbollah and bolster efforts by Iran, the United States, and Israel to extend the ceasefire following weeks of devastating conflict.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon. However, Hezbollah militants have not formally joined the agreement.
Displaced families have begun moving to southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut, despite warnings from officials not to attempt to return home until it is clear whether the ceasefire will hold.
Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he agreed to the ceasefire to advance peace efforts with Lebanon, but added that the Israeli military would not withdraw.
The U.S. State Department stated that, under the agreement, Israel reserves the right to defend itself “at any time, against planned, imminent, or ongoing attacks.” This wording suggests that Israel will retain the freedom to launch attacks at will.
