The Philippine Senate, acting as an impeachment tribunal, will begin the trial of Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday.

More than 6,000 police officers, including riot control units, have been deployed to the Senate to ensure security, as demonstrators both for and against Duterte are expected to gather there. According to a pretrial plan, Duterte or her attorney may appear in court at the start of the trial, which is scheduled to last 92 days.

If convicted, Duterte could be permanently barred from holding public office. The charges include amassing wealth of unknown origin and publicly threatening to assassinate Marcos. She has denied the charges.

A conviction would deal a fatal blow to her plans to run for president in mid-2028, by which time Marcos will have completed his six-year term.
