Venezuela’s acting president Delcy Rodríguez said that a series of strong earthquakes struck on Wednesday night, killing at least 32 people, injuring at least 700, and causing damage to communities across the South American country. The earthquakes were one of the strongest to hit Venezuela in over a century.
Rodríguez declared a state of emergency in a nationwide address on Wednesday evening, noting that the earthquake had caused damage in several states. The casualty figures released earlier on Thursday did not include La Guaira State, which Rodríguez described as a “disaster zone” and the hardest-hit area.
Governments from countries including the United States, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Panama, and Uruguay have expressed their willingness to provide assistance.
