On Thursday, the House of Representatives passed a bill providing aid to Ukraine and imposing sanctions on key sectors of the Russian economy, despite opposition from Republican leaders. Republican leaders warned that the bill would undermine negotiations aimed at achieving a similar but stronger outcome.
The bill was sponsored by New York Democratic Representative Gregory Meeks. The U.S. seeks to strengthen its support for Ukraine by providing more than $1 billion in security and reconstruction assistance. It will also provide an additional $8 billion in loans to support Ukraine’s defense.
The vote, which passed 226 to 195, indicates that the House has lost patience with President Trump’s handling of the war. This marks the second major rift between the House and Trump on foreign policy this week. The day before, the House had approved, for the first time, a War Powers Resolution aimed at preventing the U.S. from taking military action against Iran.
