U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held bilateral talks with Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Sunday as the two countries seek to stabilize their relationship, which has fallen to its lowest point in over two decades.
Rubio’s first official visit to this South Asian nation comes at a time when economic and diplomatic ties between the U.S. and India are in a slump, largely due to U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff policies, which have raised tariffs on several Indian export products.
Rubio emphasized that the Trump administration’s trade decisions are made from a global perspective to serve the U.S. economy, rather than targeting India.
Rubio will meet with his counterparts from India, Australia, and Japan in New Delhi on Tuesday. All three countries are members of the Quad, a strategic alliance in the Indo-Pacific region.
