Pakistan announced on Sunday that it would soon host talks between the United States and Iran, although neither Washington nor Tehran immediately commented.

U.S. President Donald Trump made no mention of possible talks with Pakistan, but he said on Sunday evening that Washington was engaged in discussions with Iran and that “we’re doing extremely well in that negotiation.”

Following what Pakistani officials describe as several weeks of quiet diplomacy, Islamabad has emerged as a mediator, maintaining relatively good relations with both Washington and Tehran.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said that the talks held in Pakistan were aimed at initiating direct dialogue between the U.S. and Iran. At present, U.S. and Iran communicate primarily through intermediaries. Pakistan stated that the foreign ministers’ meeting on Sunday did not include the participation of U.S. or Israel.
