On Thursday, U.S. President Donald Trump vowed not to allow Israel to annex the occupied West Bank and strongly pledged he would block the move, which Arab leaders in the region have vehemently opposed.

In response to a series of countries—including the U.S. key allies Britain and Canada—recognizing the State of Palestine, the possibility of annexing Palestinian territories has emerged within Israel. Unlike Gaza, the West Bank is administered by the Palestinian Authority.

Trump’s remarks represent a rare instance of potential pushback against senior Israeli officials, even as he continues to demand the release of hostages held by Hamas.

Considering Israel’s large-scale offensive against Gaza City, which is suffering from famine, while simultaneously expanding settlements in the West Bank, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to visit the White House on Monday. This marks his fourth trip to Washington since Trump began his second term in January.
